To turn a GPX route into a video, export a GPS track from your activity app, open RouteFlick Studio, import the file with Pro, preview the route on the 3D globe and export an MP4. GPX animation shows the shape of a ride, run or hike; it does not turn the file into camera footage. You can try Studio for free, but file import requires Pro.

About this guide and its evidence

Published by RouteFlick, the maker of the product described here. This is first-party guidance, not an independent review.

Route previews are actual exports. An example route illustrates a workflow; it does not prove every feature or a competitor's output. Export speed depends on your device.

Creator workflow and comparison documentation reviewed October 5, 2026. Named vendor sources support the documented facts; this is not a purchased-plan test or an export-speed benchmark. Unknown specifications are marked as not verified. Confirm current terms before buying.

## Try the sample and compare the result

An authored teaching track, not a recorded activity or navigation route. The Studio capture and MP4 below were made by importing this file into RouteFlick.

## What you need before you start

- A GPX file containing at least two valid GPS coordinates, or a supported KML or GeoJSON route.
- RouteFlick Pro for file import. Open Studio first if you want to explore the editor before choosing a plan.
- A browser and device capable of previewing the 3D globe and rendering your chosen video quality. Keep the tab open during export.

## 1\. Export GPX from Strava or your GPS app

For your own Strava activity, use the Strava website, open the activity and choose Export GPX from the more (ellipsis) menu. An indoor activity without GPS data will not provide a usable route. You do not connect your Strava account to RouteFlick: download the file, then import it yourself.

[Strava's official data and GPX export instructions ->](https://support.strava.com/en-us/articles/15401919-how-do-i-export-my-strava-data)

In Garmin Connect on the web, open your activity and use the gear menu to export GPX. For other activity apps, look for their GPX export option and check the provider's current access requirements. Download the actual file; an activity-sharing link is not a GPX file.

💡 Check the route before sharing it. An exported activity can reveal your home, start/end points and other sensitive locations. Do not assume your activity app's privacy settings have removed them from a downloaded file.

## 2\. Import and inspect the route in Studio

1. Open Studio and sign in to your Pro account. Save any route you want to keep before importing another.
2. Click Import in the route panel, then choose your .gpx, .kml or .geojson file.
3. Check the start, finish and route shape on the globe. RouteFlick simplifies dense tracks to at most 600 track points and creates a smaller set of editable stops; it does not preserve every GPS sample or every waypoint name.
4. Preview the animation before exporting. Inspect sharp turns and any gaps in the source track, especially if the recording contains multiple segments.

The imported geometry is a visual route, not a fitness analysis. Heart rate, cadence, elevation charts and recorded split times are not reproduced as activity metrics. Animation timing is set in the editor rather than replaying the original timestamps.

## 3\. Style the GPX animation and export MP4

1. Choose a ground transport marker suited to your activity, such as cycling or walking, and preview the imported track again.
2. Set the route colour, title and timing. Add photos or music only when you have the rights to use them.
3. Choose 16:9 for a landscape video, 9:16 for a vertical post or 1:1 for a square video. Use a resolution and frame rate available on your plan.
4. Export and keep Studio open until the MP4 download finishes. Play the saved file to check the start, finish, labels and framing before publishing it.

GPX stores geographic data; MP4 stores video. Renaming a .gpx file to .mp4 will not convert it. RouteFlick renders an animation from the coordinates, and the exported clip can then be used in your video editor.

## If the import or video does not look right

Swipe to compare ->

| Problem | What to check |
| --- | --- |
| Import asks for an upgrade | GPX, KML and GeoJSON import requires Pro. Check that the account shown in Studio is the one with your subscription. |
| No route points found | Export an activity with GPS coordinates. Check that the download is a route file, not an HTML login page, sharing link or indoor workout without a track. |
| FIT or TCX will not import | These formats are not accepted directly. Use your activity provider's GPX export, rather than just changing the file extension. |
| Corners look simplified or there is a jump | Dense tracks are reduced to at most 600 points. Source gaps or separate segments can join into one route. Trim or split the source file into the intended continuous track, then import again. |
| Export is slow or interrupted | Keep the tab open, close other graphics-heavy work and try a lower export resolution. Preview and replay the downloaded MP4 before sharing. |

## Frequently asked questions

Can I animate a GPX file for free? You can explore RouteFlick Studio for free; importing your GPX, KML or GeoJSON file requires Pro. Check the pricing page for the current limits.

Can I animate a Strava route without connecting my account? Yes. Export your GPS activity as GPX from Strava's website and import that file. RouteFlick does not need your Strava password or an account connection for this workflow.

Does the animation follow every recorded point? No. It follows a simplified version of the imported geometry, with a maximum of 600 track points. Inspect the preview for the detail that matters to your route.

Does my GPX stay on my device? File parsing and video rendering run in your browser. That does not make the whole app offline: account features, map assets and search can use network services, and saving a project to your account can store route data in the cloud. Review both your route and sharing choices before publishing.

Do I need GPX for a city-to-city trip? No. Add stops directly when you want a travel itinerary rather than a recorded activity track.
