Aurora photos have a problem: they all look like they were taken in the same place. A green sky over a dark hill is a green sky over a dark hill, whether you shot it outside Tromsø or from a car park in Alta. The map is what fixes that -- it shows the trip was a chase up 900 km of Arctic coastline, and that every one of those skies happened somewhere different.

**Real product, not a mockup.** This is the RouteFlick studio and export flow used to make the videos described in this guide.

## The route

- The classic chase: Bodø -> Svolvær -> Tromsø -> Alta -> Nordkapp -> Kirkenes. Six stops, all above the Arctic Circle.
- The short version: fly into Tromsø and work north to Alta. Three stops, a long weekend, and most people's actual aurora trip.
- The Lofoten-only cut: Bodø and the islands. Fewer aurora hours statistically, but the best foreground mountains in the country.

Set the Bodø -> Svolvær leg to boat -- that crossing is a real ferry, and boat legs follow real sea lanes instead of drawing a line over open water. Everything north of Lofoten is road. If you rode the Hurtigruten coastal ship the whole way, set every leg to boat and the route runs the coast.

## When to go (and what to say in the video)

Aurora season runs roughly late September to late March -- you need dark, and in summer this coast doesn't have any. Midwinter buys the longest dark hours; the equinox months often pair reasonable odds with roads that are less committing to drive. Either way, the honest framing for your caption is nights, not sights: four dark nights is the number that gave you the shot, and it's more interesting than pretending it was guaranteed.

## The night look

- Dark or Winter style (Pro) -- this is the one trip where a black map is correct rather than a stylistic choice.
- Route colour: aurora green or violet. It'll be the only bright thing on screen, which is the point.
- Terrain up (Pro) for the Lofoten leg -- that wall of peaks straight out of the sea is why the islands look unreal in photos.
- Free plan alternative: Satellite renders the Arctic coast dark enough at night-adjacent zoom to hold the mood.

## Settings to copy

1. Kilometres on -- nobody guesses how far Bodø is from Kirkenes, and the number is the story.
2. Speed 1x, and let the ferry leg play. Sea legs are slow on purpose and they earn the pause.
3. One aurora photo per stop, maximum. Six green skies in a row flattens into wallpaper; six green skies pinned to six places reads as a hunt.
4. Cinematic camera, start and end zoom on -- opening above a dark planet is thematically free.

## Not the fjords trip

Worth being clear if you're choosing: the famous fjord route is a different Norway -- southern, mostly summer, and built on scenery you can see in daylight. Aurora country is the north, in the dark, at speed. Some people do both and animate them as two videos, which works better than trying to make one route carry both.

💡 Add your home city as stop one with a flight leg. The arc up into the Arctic does more to establish 'this is far north' than any label on the map.
